Parent Perspective: Teamwork Leads to Undefeated Baseball Season!

Brenda J. Goodman, DA Parent
There’s nothing like the sound of the crack of the bat during springtime baseball! Well, those bats were definitely cracking this year at DA! Did you hear about DA’s middle school baseball 2018 season? They went undefeated! As a parent of one of those players, even as it was so fun to see the team play hard and win, it was even more satisfying to see them gel as a team, learn skills to be better players, how to look out for their teammates, and carry skills from the field to how they are developing as youth. I’m so grateful to our coaches for the way they mentor and teach these young athletes. I decided to get Coach Senne’s perspective on the season. Here’s what he had to say:

“First of all, we had an amazing group of kids and coaches working to improve in baseball, teamwork and other skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives. Our kids had a great attitude out there and they had fun. This was not only the first undefeated season but the first winning season that we have had since I have been coaching middle school baseball. We had 23 kids participate in our competitive games with many of them being returning players from last season. Many of those kids learned and played new positions that they will be able to play in years to come. They had great attitudes about that and were willing to help out the team. Our pitching and hitting were phenomenal. We scored the most runs in a season that I have been a part of while giving up the fewest runs as well.

For me as a coach, it was amazing to see these kids so into what they were doing. These kids worked hard to learn the game and they supported each other every game. They wanted to be in the games and they wanted to win.  As I told them a number of times, ‘I just put together the lineup. You guys go out and play the game.’  And play the game, they did. This will be a season that I will always remember and I look forward to working with these kids again in middle school and high school baseball.”

As a baseball fan, I would argue that baseball is the quintessential team sport with an emphasis on a mentality that requires alertness, focus, adaptation, changing strategy, and more. All of these mind sharpening skills and team building experiences will be an important part of the maturity of mind, heart, and ability in many areas of life for these students. Thank you to the coaches and all of those who supported this great middle school baseball team! Congratulations, Mustangs!
