Students are placed in one of our three homerooms, meeting them at their academic level and pushing them toward independence, all while providing a safe and nurturing environment. Our highly effective teachers diversify their lessons and teaching modalities while forming a relationship with each student. The 6th
grade division has three homeroom teachers, teaching assistants, and a division dean.
In addition to our core classes (Language Arts, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies), each student is taught about Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. Developmentally, this helps each student achieve an understanding of self and an ability to self-advocate—key skills for navigating the teenage years. Character development is also very important and students are taught our core values of respect and responsibility along with the virtues of empathy and resilience throughout the year.
Our Arts & Media
department provides each 6th
grader with a quarter of drama, art, and music. They then choose their own elective class during the fourth quarter. Students also enjoy physical education and recess every day.
Technology is integrated into the classroom through the use of personal devices and a mac lab. Students are welcome to bring in their own device, however we have a set of iPads loaded with educational apps that students may check out. Technology and online etiquette is taught through our character education course, utilizing programs such as Common Sense Media.
Experiential Education is also introduced at the 6th grade level. Each year, we head to Florissant, Colorado for a three-day overnight trip to High Trails Outdoor Education Camp. Here, we focus on hands-on learning, an appreciation for nature, and a sense of wonder, while fostering the connections of our community. This yearly tradition is a highlight of the 6th grade experience.
Ultimately, we strive to show students that learning can be invigorating and fun!
