The term twice-exceptional describes a student who is gifted and talented, who also lives with a learning difference such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or a processing disorder. These two exceptionalities do not cancel each other out. A child can read years above grade level and still need extra time on written work. A student can design an intricate video game and still shut down during a timed test. When people hear "gifted," they picture a child who breezes through school. A bright student who talks circles around adults may seem "fine" academically, even while quietly falling apart over homework. A creative thinker who cannot sit still may get labeled disruptive long before anyone notices the giftedness underneath the behavior. Deep knowledge of a niche subject, alongside trouble following multi-step directions
Perfectionism that leads to shutdown rather than effort

Boredom that looks like defiance, or anxiety that looks like laziness

Supporting a twice-exceptional child starts with understanding the whole learner, not just the test scores or the behavior reports. Effective support usually includes a thorough cognitive and academic evaluation. It also requires teachers trained to recognize both giftedness and learning differences, plus a curriculum flexible enough to challenge strengths while scaffolding weaknesses. Small class sizes matter here more than almost anywhere else in education. A 2e student's needs can shift from one subject to the next, and even from one day to the next.
