DA Celebrates Eric Carle Day

On September 14, the literacy specialists, librarian, arts and media faculty, and elementary and 6th grade faculty partnered together to offer a morning exploring artist and illustrator Eric Carle. Students rotated through stations, creating caterpillars, acting as sloths, decorating a dragon with tissue paper, hearing stories, coloring, drawing clouds with shaving cream, and practicing, as Eric Carle said, “Simplify, slow down, be kind.”

The students were having fun through play, but they were also learning. They learned about the life cycle of the caterpillar, healthy eating habits, animals and their habitats, different types of clouds, and artist Franz Marc.

The morning of playful exploration and the collaboration between over 20 teachers allowed students to explore multiple types of learning, celebrate creativity, and interact with every classroom and specials teacher. We collaborated for many reasons—to honor different types of learners and for the fun of it, but mostly, we collaborated because of hope. We have big hopes and dreams for this school year and for your student, and we want them to see how much we believe in them. When talking about his classic book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle said it best, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar story is about hope. You, like the little caterpillar, will grow up, unfold your wings and fly off into the future.”
