Victor Block, DA Class of 2008: TV Station Morning News Director

As a sports fanatic, Victor Block always wanted to be involved in a career involving sports. Block graduated from Denver Academy in 2008 and went on to receive his degree in public relations, news media, and television production from Colorado Mesa University in 2012. He currently works at KKCO/KJCT, an ABC and NBC affiliate in Grand Junction, Colo., as a morning news director. He edits news stories, codes the show, and directs the two-hour morning show and noon show.

Block says DA teacher Ramsey Brookhart had the biggest impact on him: Brookhart taught him how to write and gave him confidence inside and outside the classroom. Brookhart was also Block’s DA soccer coach and encouraged him to play at the college level.

How did DA impact your education and life choices?
Denver Academy gave me the tools I needed to write in all different forms, such as press releases, research papers, and broadcast styles. It also gave me the confidence to talk to people when interviewing either for a job or on the job. DA also gave me confidence in sports where the coaches believe in their athletes to do their best — which gave me confidence when I played soccer at Colorado Mesa University.

What are some of your hobbies?
I love to play sports. I play a lot of basketball and volleyball and recently took up golf. I enjoy filming sports on the side.

What were some of your career goals?
To work either in big network news or big network sports as a sports videographer.

Why did you choose your career and what do you love about it?
I always loved sports and I knew I wouldn’t make it professionally, but I also knew in college that going into media I could still be close to sports as a career! I love how my TV station is willing to give me a chance to try something I’m interested in and see if I want to pursue it more. Meeting new people is one of the best aspects of my job.
