Fifth Graders are Fighting Hunger

The 5th grade is banding together to help fight hunger this Thanksgiving season. As a grade, they were inspired by seeing the play adaptation of "Maddie's Fridge", a story about childhood hunger. The students are collecting food in the Elementary/6th Grade Building from November 4-22. They are collecting on behalf of Metro Caring, a local Denver food pantry that is looking for specific food and non-food items to help their clients. Fifth-graders are hoping to collect grains, proteins, fruits, vegetables, and other various items as listed below: 

Fruits and Vegetables 
    • Look for ‘no salt added’ or ‘low sodium’, ‘no sugar added’ and ‘100% juice’
      • Tomato Sauce 
      • Low sodium Canned Vegetables 
      • Canned Fruits In Juice or Water 
      • Applesauce (unsweetened) 
  • Grains 
    • Oatmeal (unsweetened) 
    • Low sugar/ high fiber cereal (cheerios, raisin bran, etc)
    • Whole-wheat flour
    • Rice 
    • Whole grain pasta 
  • Protein
    • Look for ‘no salt added’, ‘low- sodium’ and ‘canned in water’ 
      • Canned chicken 
      • Dried beans and lentils 
      • Canned tuna 
      • Nuts and nut butter
  • Other
    • Cooking oil 
    • Spices 
    • Coffee and tea
    • Honey 
  • Non-foods 
    • Diapers
    • Feminine hygiene products 
    • Toothbrushes 
    • Toothpaste 
    • Soap 
    • Shampoo
    • Conditioner
