DA unveils newly restored Historic Chapel Library

On Friday, March 2, Denver Academy celebrated the Grand Reopening of its Historic Chapel Library. This event marked the completion of a three-year project to restore the Library in partnership with the State Historical Fund. The project included the restoration of the building’s stained glass windows, copper cupola and front door.

Remarks on the project and its importance to DA were given by Denver Academy Headmaster Mark Twarogowski, as well as Denver Academy staff members Librarian Jolene Gutierrez, Director of Facilities Jim Levinson, and Director of Grants Shelley Devitt. History Colorado State Historical Fund Preservation Specialist Anne McCleave also spoke at the event, and Councilwoman for District 4, Kendra Black helped cut the ceremonial ribbon. Denver Academy Student Library Ambassadors provided tours of the space, spoke about why the library and reading is important to them, and shared information about the history of the Chapel Library and the DA campus.

“Architecture is a direct symbol of our history,” DA Librarian Jolene Gutierrez said. “By preserving historic structures such as our Chapel Library, we are able to occupy the very same spaces as the generations before us. There is no better way to conserve our past than through the preservation of these historic buildings.”

The Grand Reopening coincided with National Read Across America Day, which was created by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 and is the nation’s largest celebration of reading, focusing coast-to-coast attention on the importance and the joys of reading. It also just happens to take place annually on Dr. Seuss’s birthday! Denver Academy elementary and 6th grade students devoted their Friday afternoon to reading. Students read books of choice, including Dr. Seuss books, and some classes enjoyed Seuss-related games, crafts, and activities.
