Mr. Ernewein honored by Council for Learning Disabilities

Denver Academy’s Director of Education Philippe Ernewein was honored with the 2017 Professional of the Year Award from the Colorado Council for Learning Disabilities. This annual award honors outstanding performance and commitment by a Colorado professional in a leadership role working in the field of learning disabilities outside of the classroom to enhance the professional learning of others and impact the lives of those with learning disabilities. As part of this award, he was nominated and subsequently selected for the Floyd G. Hudson Service Award, presented to one education professional internationally each year by the Council for Learning Disabilities (CLD). Ernewein was presented with this prestigious award at the 39th International Conference on Learning Disabilities in Baltimore, Maryland on October 19 and 20, where he was given the opportunity to lead a conference session as well.

Mr. Ernewein was also recognized locally by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock with a proclamation from the City and County of Denver naming October 13, 2017, as Philippe Ernewein Day.

"Philippe was presented with this award, not only for his excellent partnership with teachers as well as parents, but also for being a caring, committed, and dedicated educator," Co-chair for the Leadership Development Committee of the Floyd G. Hudson Service Award Min Mize said.

“I have worked with Philippe Ernewein for more than 20 years and have never encountered a more passionate, professional, and dedicated educator,” Denver Academy Headmaster Mark Twarogowski said. “From his first years as an educator, he has managed to find a distinct satisfaction and effectiveness in teaching those students for which a traditional educational model was failing. Simply put, Philippe works until he finds what works. In his role as Denver Academy’s Director of Education, he instills this same drive and mindset in the classroom teachers he now trains. The impact Philippe had on his own students is now multiplied geometrically through his work with teachers.”

In addition to receiving the Floyd G. Hudson Service Award, Mr. Ernewein presented at the CLD’s 39th International Conference on Learning Disabilities. His session, “How are you smart? Honoring cognitive diversity in our classrooms,” highlighted strategies and classroom techniques that support the honoring of cognitive diversity using a strength-based empowerment teaching model.
