A Day at Miller Farms & Exploring Science
Elementary classes headed out to the fields on Friday, October 14th. Miller Farms, located in Platteville, CO is a working farm that provides our students an opportunity to pick some fresh vegetables, truly experiencing the meaning of farm to table. This year, students were able to take the hayride out to the fields and pick peppers, tomatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, corn, kale, dill, and cabbage. Each student also took home a pumpkin!

Classes are wrapping up their science units for the quarter. Some fun experiments have been going on in the elementary building this quarter! Ms. Pellouchoud's class has been busy studying the solar system. They created posters showing what they had learned. Ms. Grange's class has been looking at chemical reactions. Students got to choose their ingredients for their final experiment. Fourth grader, Torin W., discovered that when you mix baking soda and lime juice, you get an explosion of bubbles! Ms. Senne's class worked on light and energy this quarter. Some fun experiments included the transfer of energy through Slinkys and how white light travels through prisms. Ms. Pollard's class wrapped up their electrical circuits unit by creating their own battery powered cars. Jessica H. said that using what they learned to build their own cars was a lot of fun!

Avid 4 Adventure Field Trip
The Elementary classes enjoyed a beautiful day at Bear Creek Lake on their Avid 4 Adventure field trip this week. Each class participated in a variety of activities allowing them to try new things, conquer some fears, and improve their skills. We tapped into many different "smarts," including kinesthetic, nature, intrapersonal, and interpersonal, during canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, and team building.

Watching the kids focus on communication and gain confidence is inspiring. Fifth-grader Grant Loui said, "I really liked that the instructors showed us how to use the equipment and worked with us to do our best." New DA student, Cager Cowden, reported that the lake and foothills were a beautiful site for a field trip. This annual outing has become a division favorite!

DA Celebrates Roald Dahl's 100th Birthday!
Did you know that Roald Dahl, author of
Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, would have turned 100 the week of September 12? In honor of this fun author, the DA Elementary and Sixth Grade divisions were treated with a variety of activities, thanks to our Literacy Specialists. Students went to each room in the divisions, participating in activities like pin the worm in Mr. Twit’s beard, make a dream jar, design a candy wrapper, and draw a Whangdoodle! In Elementary and Sixth Grade, we highlight different authors or writing genres each month.
