Seniors are enjoying the benefits of four years of hard work as they begin to hear back from schools and confirm their plans for next year. In preparation for life in the real world, they will partake in Life Skills sessions every Wednesday. Few topics are out of bounds for these fun learning opportunities—including airing one’s dirty laundry at a local laundromat! Although juniors spent the fall watching as their older friends slaved over applications, they are now feeling the heat as they begin the college selection process themselves. Just last month, junior parents and students attended College Night for Juniors; over the next two months they will each meet to formulate an individualized game plan. Freshmen and sophomores will join the party during the last week of February when all high school students participate in College Week. Students have taken an interest inventory to explore areas of study and will engage in classes within their “majors” throughout the week. To build on this theme, high school students will plan and carry out all-day job shadows away from Denver Academy on March 12; students and parents can begin discussing options for this important educational opportunity. There will be more details to come. Denver Academy is fortunate to host the second annual USA Gap Year Fair tomorrow, February 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the gym. The event will showcase 30 organizations offering year-long programs tailored for recent high school graduates. Holly Bull, President of The Center for Interim Programs, will offer a keynote address at 1:30 p.m. highlighting the importance of a gap year for some students. The second and final Parenting Night of the current school year will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Core Commons on March 16. Structured similar to last fall’s Parenting Night, parents will attend three of nine sessions offered. For more information about post-graduate planning at Denver Academy or to join the e-mail list, please contact me at amacy@denveracademy.org. Open House Tomorrow If you know anyone who is interested in learning more about DA, please let them know that we will be holding an open house tomorrow (Saturday, February 6) from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Those who are unable to attend can set up a meeting with Admissions by calling 303-777-5161. Baby News Congratulations to Philippe Ernewein and his family who welcomed a baby girl this week! Linden Irene Ernewein weighed 7 pounds 3 oz. and is 20 inches long. Click here to see a picture of Linden and her big sister Harper. Final Home Basketball Game and Senior Night Please come out to support the Mustangs next Tuesday, February 9 for our last home game. This game will also serve as “senior night” as we will recognize our seniors prior to each game. The girls’ game is at 4:00 p.m. and the boys tip off at 5:00 p.m. This night has also been declared a “white out night.” Please wear as much white as you can to the game! Val–o–Grams A Denver Academy tradition for 11 years! From February 8–12 all DA students have an opportunity to purchase low cost valentines for their friends and teachers. Prices are as follows: Student Senate sponsors this fun event and will be selling at lunch and before school beginning February 8. For more information, please contact Linda Sears at DA. Zeus Wants You to Attend the Snowball Dance! This year's Snowball dance is Saturday, February 20 from 8:00–11:00 p.m. in the Core Atrium. This year's theme is Zeus Wants You! The dance is semi–formal (no togas please). Tickets are $15 for a single and $25 for a couple. All high school students are welcome. Elementary Students Inspired by Author Visit By Jerica McClure-Pries Author Bruce Hale created an inspiring and fun-filled day for our elementary and 6th grade students this past Tuesday. Students who may tend to drag their feet about reading and writing were bouncing up and down with excitement. During the story writing brainstorming session, the room was filled with hands flying in the air, an abundance of creativity, and an enthusiastic energy around writing. Mr. Hale’s message "I believe everyone has a story to tell" was taken to heart by many students. With pencils in hand and ideas rolling around like marbles spilled on a blacktop, students have been eagerly working on telling their stories. Thanks to funds provided by DAPA, we were able to have a day of inspiration that our students will never forget. Click here to view pictures of Mr. Hale’s visit. Award-Winning Author Avi To Visit/Ethiopia Reads Fundraising Thanks to a letter written by one of our parents, Newbery-award-winning author Avi will be visiting our 4th-6th grade students on Wednesday, March 3 from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. to talk with them about some of his books and being a writer. Avi has dysgraphia and goes through many drafts during the writing process, so his personal story is particularly inspiring for our students. We are currently pre-selling Avi’s books (click here to download the order form) as part of our fundraising for Ethiopia Reads. The Avi book order due date has been extended to next Wednesday, February 10. At least 35% of our book sales will go to Ethiopia Reads to assist them in building libraries and buying books for children in Ethiopia. With our recent Bruce Hale book sales, we made over $150 for Ethiopia Reads, so we can make a difference! During the last week of February, we’ll be hosting other fundraising activities for Ethiopia Reads and celebrating books! A Readers’ Theater production is planned for that week, so look for more information regarding that and other fun events soon. If you have any questions, please contact Jolene Gutierrez, Denver Academy Librarian, at jgutierrez@denveracademy.org or 303/777-5870, ext. 263. Homeroom Pictures On March 10 and 11 all homerooms will have their pictures taken by Lifetouch, our photography company. High School students will be photographed on Wednesday, March 10 and Elementary/Middle School will be photographed on Thursday, March 11. Picture packets for ordering will go home with students the first week of March. Save the Date for Prom! Mark your calendars now for Denver Academy's Prom.
