No Classes for Students: Faculty Attending “Courage to Risk” Conference

From our Headmaster
By Kevin Smith

Welcome back!

I was so excited to get back on campus this week. Visiting with friends and family over the holidays was great, but I so love my work and the incredible people who choose to be a part of the DA community.  The New Year brings many opportunities and reasons to celebrate; for Maria and me one of the best was welcoming a new niece right before the end of the year. Often January brings “resolutions” for many. I like to set goals and particularly those that I can measure. For this year they include riding my bike at least 2,500 miles, reading at least 3 books per month, and completing the “Triple Bypass” bicycle ride and a fall marathon. Should be an exciting year!

Denver Academy is doing an excellent job of achieving the goals we set at the beginning of the school year.  Our academic team is doing an excellent job educating students, we have the first draft of our updated curriculum in hand, we are in a very strong and stable position with our budget, and our strategic planning process is nearing the time when we will advance our major 5-year goals with the Board Of Trustees. Once these are approved, we will create opportunities to again engage families and students in helping to define specific initiatives to advance DA.

DA continues to grow and we have welcomed many new students to campus this year. As we all know, traditional schools cannot provide what DA does in terms of a philosophy developed over 30 years to address the needs of smart students who learn differently. I also believe the most significant catalyst to our students’ achievements are our extraordinary teachers who not only are adept at organizing lessons but more significantly, forming trusting relationships with our students and investing in each.  If you know of a student or family that would benefit from a DA education, please refer them to our admissions office.  We aspire to serve as many students as we are capable and providing the transformational experience that is DA.

Happy New Year!

14th Annual DA Alumni/Faculty Basketball Game
Don’t miss this Denver Academy tradition! The Alumni/Faculty Basketball Game will take place in the gym on Saturday, January 9 at 11 a.m. Come support the alumni and the faculty/staff.  After the game, there will be lunch in the Core High School atrium catered by Kokoro. Lunch is $5 per person; game is free. Halftime will feature a scrimmage with members of boys’ high school developmental basketball team! GO MUSTANGS!

Important Post-Secondary Information for Juniors
All junior students and parents are requested to attend College and Transition Night on Wednesday, January 13 at 6:30 p.m. If you are unable to attend, please RSVP to Amy Macy for the makeup workshop on Thursday, January 14 at 3 p.m. in Room 204 in the Prep Division.

Additionally, the College & Transition team will begin holding meetings this semester with 11th grade students and parents to begin post-secondary planning. Click here for more information and to download important forms.

Movies Made in Middle School (MMIMS)
Come out to support DA’s aspiring filmmakers in the middle school when they show off their movies on Thursday, January 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the Core Commons. Each filmmaker will receive an award created by MS artists and also have an “Oscar moment.”

MMIMS is a creative project that debuted last year as a collaboration between the DA theatre and film departments. The class is taught by high school film teacher Kris Fritzsche and MS drama teacher Katie Bradford.

Graduation Supplies and Class Rings
This month we have scheduled two very important meetings for ordering graduation supplies (including caps and gowns and announcements) and class rings. Representatives from Jostens will be here in the Core Commons at the following times:

  • Graduation Supplies
    • Monday, January 11 (2:15–3:00): Informational meeting and ordering instructions (required for seniors)
    • Wednesday, January 13 (11:45–1:30): Student orders taken in the High School Atrium
  • Class Rings (open to all interested sophomores, juniors and seniors)
    • Monday, January 25 (2:15–3:00): Information and ordering instructions
    • Thursday, January 28 (11:30–1:30): Student orders taken
Unless orders are paid in full, deposits are $60 and are due on the day of ordering.

Author to Visit Elementary
Author Bruce Hale will visit our Elementary School on Tuesday, February 2. Bruce is a hilarious author of over 20 books for kids. To learn more about Bruce, visit www.brucehale.com.

Books are available for purchase and orders are due by next Thursday, January 14 (click here to download the order form). A small amount of extra books will be ordered and on hand the day of Mr. Hale’s visit, but we strongly recommend pre-ordering your book. We will earn at least 30% in profits, and these profits will be donated to Ethiopia Reads.

Habitat for Humanity Comes to DA
Habitat for Humanity is building townhomes at Colorado Blvd. and I–25. Student volunteers will be working on Thursdays for the next twelve weeks. They will be given the opportunity to sign up for as many of these Thursdays as fit their schedules. If you are 16 or older and would like to volunteer your time, please see Progressive student Mark Norin for information or call Linda Sears at DA 303-777-5870.

Recycling Opportunities
DA students and teachers are undertaking a variety of recycling efforts. Please look for recycling containers for the following items:

  • Holiday Lights: Senior Mark Norin is is requesting that the DA community recycle any broken light strings to boxes in the Core Commons and Progressive Building.  He will collect and send them on to a charitable organization called Lights for Life.  The light strands are sold to recyclers for the copper they contain. The funds received from the sale of these commodities are used to provide financial assistance to the families of children with cancer along with sponsoring kids camps.
  • Cell Phones and Batteries: Teachers Wanda Zimmerman and Paul Sasaki are collecting old cell phones and batteries so that they can be disposed of properly. Please look for the recycling containers in Progressive classrooms.

Thank you for your help!

Jamba Juice Program Ongoing
It’s a Sweet Deal....Jamba Juice comes to Denver Academy twice a week during lunch for our students! Jamba Juice will be at DA on Mondays for the high school divisions and on Fridays for the middle and elementary school divisions.

They bring several different 16 oz. smoothies to choose from at a cost of $3.00. This is an ongoing program! Jamba Juice in turn returns 20 percent of the proceeds directly back to DA, which then goes back into the classrooms! Enjoy and thank you!
